Alcohol Interlock Program
For certain alcohol-related driving offences, the court can reduce the disqualification period otherwise applicable if you agree to have an 'interlock device' fitted to your car.
What is an 'interlock device'?
An 'interlock device' is a machine that detects alcohol in your breath. It is attached to your car's ignition system. Your car will start after you blow into the device and wait a few seconds for your breath to be analysed. Your car will not start if alcohol is detected.
What are the benefits of the Alcohol Interlock Program?
If you are accepted into the Alcohol Interlock Program, you will be 'off the road' for less time than usual (ie for the 'disqualification compliance period) and can then drive with an interlock device installed into your car for the 'minimum interlock participation period'.
Who is eligible?
The following is a list of eligible offences, 'disqualification compliance periods' (the time you must spend off the road) and 'minimum interlock participation periods' (the time that the device must then be in your car):
